I designed a small model of a city with different tangible objects, like clouds, trees, and buildings. This small city was built to remind a diorama, and each element is connected to a virtual interface through Makey Makey.
Also, I created a virtual city using Processing, with the same elements. Both cities are connected. Therefore, by touching the tangible objects, different effects in the virtual city are released. For example, by touching the clouds once, the rain appears in the virtual city; and by touching them twice, the snow appears. Then, by touching the paper buildings, different city sounds are heard. Finally, when the user touches the trees, new leaves grow in the virtual trees.
This project is a prototype for a possible installation in a public space. By increasing the model size to a human size, the user's experience and immersion will be enhanced. I chose the topic of the city because most of my life I have been living in big cities, and I enjoy them because of the diversity of crowd and space they offer. However, in this work, I am proposing a different kind of city, an inexistent landscape, a virtual space that is activated while interacting with a paper city.
