EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF EVALUATIVE PROCESS

We conducted an initial Expert Review during November 2015, which revealed a wealth of usability issues. The combined Cognitive Walkthrough identified 12 categories of major issues and a myriad of minor ones. The team used a Heuristic Evaluation template with weighted heuristics that delivers an overall score. Our combined average score was 63 which is squarely in the “moderate” range and is defined as “users should be able to use this site or system and complete most important tasks; however, the user experience could be significantly improved.”

A usability test plan was designed based on the issues identified in the Expert Review. Eleven participants completed a set of tasks derived from the most severe categories of issues: dashboard, navigation, user workflow, and reporting. Users also completed a prequestionnaire and a post-interview questionnaire which provided us with demographic data, enabling us to assess the overall usability of Rundown.

OVERVIEW OF APPLICATION

Rundown is an Indianapolis-based startup developing a content cloud for professional content teams. Their newsroom style software is designed to address a need in the growing market segment of content creators. At the core of Rundown is an elastic, predictive algorithm that allows professional content teams to anticipate audience demand at the topic level and dynamically assign it to their team members based on availability and skill set.

As previously discussed, Rundown is a workflow management system for content creators and other content management professionals. As such, it features a dashboard as well as several modules in the workflow including strategy, pitches, stories, tasks, approval, publish, and reports. Rundown is powered by MUSE The Media Utility/Suggestion Engine. MUSE learns about the team and makes helpful suggestions throughout the content production process.
